THE ELECTRONIC CHART AS AN ESSENTIAL ADJUNCT IN AN EFFECTIVE VESSEL TRAFFIC SYSTEM

This paper tells how the technology that has served air traffic control operations for many years can, with the aid of electronic charts, be put to the service of the maritime community, as well. It describes a vessel traffic system that exploits the flexibility afforded by today's computer technology and the electronic charts that can be produced. By digitizing sensor-derived information such as radar video--previously used only as analog signals displayed on a PPI--it is possible to create an interaction between the digitized navigation chart and digitized target data that significantly advances the goal of vessel traffic management.
