GENERIC MOBILE SATELLITE SERVICE FOR THE UNITED STATES

A new mobile satellite system is described that will provide every type of mobile communications for maritime, land and aeronautical users in the United States and its adjacent waters. Expected to become operational in 1993, the system wil be coordinated with a similar Canadian system to serve the entire North American region. Voice services will be available with equipment resembling cellular radio telephones. Users will be able to select their own data rates and protocols for digital communications. Position fixing and surveillance will be accomplished by the transmission of fixes determined aboard a craft or by range measurements from pairs of dedicated geostationary satellites. The satellites and the Network Operations Center (NOC) will be owned and operated by the American Mobile Satellite Consortium.
