Although CC/R's Digital Selective Calling System (DSC) is the proposed method of providing selective calling (selcal) capability to medium-and-high-frequency high-seas single sideband radiotelephone users, DSC equipment is seldom found aboard vessels or at land radio stations in the U.S. Two major U.S. high-seas radio operators, however, do broadcast traffic lists using SITOR FEC, a digital transmission system that could be used for selcal service until DSC is fully deployed. The selcal concept is reviewed and the use of SITOR FEC teleprinter broadcast system, ideal for use by selcal ringers, is explained.
