Neural networks are a branch of Artificial Intelligence. Each network consists of a set of connected nodes and a signal propagation rule. As this article explains, neural networks look promising in a broad range of applications involving the performance of difficult data-processing and data-interpretation tasks. They take problem solving one step further in that they can match stored examples against a new one, building on experience to provide better answers. Their application to power plant load forecasting and to fault detection for abnormal distribution-feeder events is described.
