The wake distribution has often been unsatisfactory for ships with very high aftbody block coefficients. The author explains how asymmetric sterns can help to correct the problem and describes tests showing that such sterns can result in efficiency gains of 6%. He states that despite the higher initial costs of an asymmetric stern, the power savings derived justify the investment.
