A REVOLUTION IN MATERIALS: FIBRE COMPOSITES

This article reprints the 1989 Andrew Laing Memorial Lecture, which offered insights into the principles that must underlie the effective design and manufacture of structural engineering components based on composite materials. Following an introductory section, the topics covered are: the properties of fibers; composite materials made from unidirectional laminae; composite material laminates; designing for performance; unexpected problems that can arise; and energy absorbing structural composites.
