DIESEL ELECTRICS POWER FRIGATE FOR CRUISE WITH GAS TURBINES FOR BOOST

The Type 23 antisubmarine frigate HMS NORFOLK is the first of seven ships for the British Royal Navy to be equipped with a combined diesel electric and gas turbine propulsion system. The system, which is described, is powered by four 1.3 MW gensets and two Spey SM1As rated at 14 MW each. The new ship will be cheaper to operate, not only because of the greater fuel efficiency of electric propulsion, but also because of the smaller crew.
