FIRE PROTECTION OF CAR FERRIES--PRACTICAL ASSESSMENT OF SAFETY SYSTEMS ON SHIPS

The fire risk associated with passenger automobile and railroad car ferries is examined. Based on detailed analyses of two actual fires aboard Polish ferries, changes in the fire protection regulations are proposed. The changes relate to: the classification of fire risk level in car and rail holds, which it is said should be classified as "high-risk spaces"; additional protection of emergency systems and their energy supplies; protection of fire-fighting installations against destruction, inadequate power or insufficient supplies of extinguishing agents during a fire; additional supplies of extinguishing agents from an alternate source; and the protection against destruction by fire of electrical cables supplying vital shipboard systems.
