APPLICATION IN PRACTICE OF THE PRESENT SOLAS-REQUIREMENTS FOR STRUCTURAL FIRE PROTECTION

Structural fire protection plays an essential part in successfully coping with shipboard fires. The most important fire protection regulations to be observed during ship construction form an integral part of the International Convention on the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). The structural fire protection requirements of SOLAS are normally fully covered by the construction rules of the classification societies, and several flag states have supplementary national requirements. This paper deals with the application in practice of the current SOLAS provisions, discussing, in turn, basic elements of structural fire protection; structural subdivision of accommodation and service areas; special features of internal fire protection subdivision; means of escape in accommodation and service areas; and openings in fire-resisting divisions.
