A QUANTITATIVE MULTI-ELEMENT METHOD FOR THE DETERMINATION OF PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTION IN LUBRICATING OIL SAMPLES

A description is given of a multipurpose optical emission spectrometer that combines two independent spectrometers serviced by one computer and readout system: a rotating-disc-electrode (RDE) arc emission spectrometer, and an inductively-coupled-plasma (ICP) spectrometer. The spectrometer was developed to meet present and future lubricating oil analysis requirements, particularly those of commercial oil analysis laboratories and the military. Oil analysis requirements and the advantages and disadvantages of each spectroscopic method are discussed. A spectrometric oil analysis method is described that is more responsive to large particles in an oil sample.
