THE CROSS FLOW EFFECT ON THE FORCE AND MOMENT ACTING ON A SWATH SHIP

The free surface flow around a small water-plane area twin-hull (SWATH) ship is investigated by taking into account the cross flow effect. In previous investigations, the numerical computations were made by known source distributions on the center-plane of the twin struts and along the center-lines of the lower hulls. In the present paper, an improved approximation is obtained by distributing the normal doublets on the center planes of the struts. The strength of the doublet distributions is obtained by solving an integral equation satisfying the vanishing normal velocity on the center- planes. The computations are made with or without the Kutta condition imposed at the downstream ends of the struts. The computed results of the wave resistance, side force and the moments are presented. It is found, however, that the effect of the cross flow on the wave resistance is insignificant.
