METHODOLOGY AND INSTRUMENTATION FOR A SURVEY OF THE ELECTRICAL POWER GENERATION AND DISTRIBUTION ON A MODERN MERCHANT SHIP

CETENA (Italian Ship Research Center) has designed and built the Electrical Consumption Monitoring System (ECOM), which this paper describes. The purpose of the equipment is to gather information that can be used to refine the design criteria for ship electric power plants and their auxiliary systems. The ECOM instrument is intended to record the electrical power generated on a new merchant ship over a period approaching a year. The application of the system aboard an actual vessel over a six-month period is also described and some examples of the electrical parameter diagrams obtained from that installation are shown.
