AN APPRAISAL OF DEVELOPMENTS IN MARITIME COMMUNICATIONS

The growth in shipboard electronic systems has been so great that the systems have become an essential part of the ship's safe and efficient operation rather than playing a supportive role. This paper considers the role and training of the person most suited to assume responsibility for such systems. The integration of all communications and electronics maintenance duties in a single officer is presented as a possible solution. It is proposed that the present radio/electronics officer, released from watchkeeping during the transition period to the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System, could fulfill the requirement, further skills being obtained as new and more sophisticated tonnage comes to trade.
