This article looks at the design and safety advantages of the Container Safety Apparatus (CSA) developed for the contract stevedore by the Metropolitan Stevedore Company in Wilmington, California. The apparatus is a purpose-designed cage with top corner castings and the dimensions of a 20-foot freight container. It is used for access when lifted from the top. Left on the container stow on the ship's deck, however, it is designed to be used as a means of anchorage for longshoremen, who leave it to cone or decone the containers in the stow.
