SEMIAUTOMATIC BUTT WELDING OF BULB-PLATE FRAMING ON COPPER SHAPING BACKING STRAPS

Asymmetrical and symmetrical bulb plate is widely used for framing ships built for the merchant marine and for the fishing industry. The butts of this framing are welded by manual arc or by semiautomatic carbon dioxide-shielded welding with free seam formation. It is explained how the technology involved in these methods for welding joints does not make for high welding productivity. Ways of using uncooled copper shaping backing strips to increase the productivity of the semiautomatic method by a factor of 2-2.5 and to improve weld quality are described.
