The mandate of Committee V.6 of the ISSC (International Ship and Offshore Structures Congress) is concern for the application to structural design of stochastic models and extreme value statistics. Special consideration is given to the significance of multivariate distributions, assumptions of independence, nonlinear systems, and the use of stochastic modeling techniques for establishing fatigue and ultimate load design criteria. In accordance with this mandate, the matters dealt with in this 1988 report of the Committee include: developments in environmental modeling and multivariate distributions for environmental parameters; excitation forces; Morison loading; response analysis; stochastic models for fatigue analysis that are based on S-N curves and a fracture mechanics approach; reliability analysis methods; and the utilization of full-scale service data to update reliabilities. Suggestions are presented for future research in stochastic modeling.
