In this invited lecture before the 10th International Ship and Offshore Structures Congress, the author attempts to clarify and discuss the nature of the different sources of uncertainty relevant to structural reliability. In a mathemetically unified model, these should be taken into consideration when evaluating structural reliability in probabalistic terms. The last section raises the question of what empirical information is obtained about the structure from a calculated probability of the occurrence of a specified adverse event.
