STATE-OF-THE-ART SEPARATION OF LARGE DIESEL ENGINE LUBE OILS

Heavy oils are increasingly favoring the formation of coke-like residues. Together with other inorganic solid impurities and combustion ash, some of these residues enter the lube oil system of a ship's diesel engine. In addition, decreases in fuel consumption have been accompanied by higher thermal and mechanical stressing of engine parts. The lube oils developed to deal with these new conditions contained more dispersants and detergents, which in turn made centrifugal separation more difficult. This paper looks at factors affecting the lubrication systems and lube oil treatment. It is meant as an information guide for engineers responsible for designing lubrication systems and as a help to operating personnel in bettering their understanding of the complexities involved.
