MODERN CERAMIC TECHNOLOGY ENHANCEMENT FOR DIESEL ENGINE OPERATION

At some time in the future, the adiabatic diesel engine will attempt to improve the diesel's performance on difficult future diesel fuel oils, but that time is not near. In the meantime, technologies that bridge the gap between current, sensitive diesel engine designs and the requirements of future adiabatic (insulated) diesels are discussed. Selected ceramic coatings for metal engine components have become available to help bridge this gap, providing the reduced fuel sensitivity characteristic of the adiabatic engine without involving the time and expense needed to develop a commercial engine of that type. The discussion of them covers the advantages of ceramic coatings, descriptions of ceramic coatings, and tests performed to evaluate ceramic coating performance.
