MANUEVERING TRIALS FOR A MODERN CONTAINER SHIP

Reliable statements concerning the model/full-scale correlation for ship maneuvering performance must be based on model tests and full- scale trials under equivalent conditions, especially that of identical drafts, and such data is scarce. This article represents an exception, reporting on maneuvering model tests and full-scale trials under near-identical conditions for a container carrier of the latest generation. The limited width of the towing tank used limited the model tests to zig-zag maneuvers, and a good agreement was obtained with full-scale results for the same maneuver. Numerical simulations of turning circles for the ship model demonstrated satisfactory qualitative agreement with the corresponding full-scale measurements.
