A STUDY ON THE MATHEMETICAL MODEL FOR THE MANEUVERABILITY OF SHIP IN HARBOR

Computer simulation capabilities are increasing the demand for the estimation, in the design stage, of ship maneuvering performance. It is especially important to evaluate the safety of harbor navigation because of the need to skillfully perform such operations as short turning and parallel shifting in the restricted waters involved. This paper presents some mathematical models for evaluating the rudder force and the self-propulsion factors, such as thrust deduction and wake, under propeller load conditions that vary widely owing to the harbor maneuvering motions. It is shown that computer simulations carried out using the mathematical models showed good agreement with experimental results.
