INFLUENCES OF HIGH VISCOUS FUEL ON DIESEL ENGINE INJECTION CHARACTERISTICS

The injection characteristics of diesel engines are generally different for heavy fuel operations from those for operations using marine diesel oil, and the viscosity of the heavy fuel strongly influences those characteristics. To develop a better understanding of this influence as an aid in injection system design, a series of experiments and simulation calculations were carried out and are described. Results confirm that the decrease in leakage from the plunger clearance (up to 50cSt) and the decrease of the flow coefficient at the nozzle hole (more than 50cSt) affect injection characteristics at increasing fuel viscosities.
