AN ANALYSIS OF THE PERFORMANCE OF PLANING HULLS

This paper presents an analysis of the performance of planing hulls, based on the extensive experimental results of the Series 62 of the Taylor Model Basin. The tests on this systematic series of hulls cover a wide range of speeds, displacements, beams, and center of gravity locations. It is found that it is possible to condense the large collection of experimental data for this series into a relatively few graphs that give a comprehensive picture of the performance of this class of hulls. It is shown how the results of this study may be utilized for the rational design of planing hulls. Using the results of this study we show how significant improvements are possible in the performance of planing hulls.
