SAFE STOWAGE IN RO-RO OPERATIONS

November 1981 saw the adoption of a resolution drafted by the Sub- Committee on Containers and Cargoes of the IMO's Maritime Safety Committee. The resolution, for the first time, addressed such items as the details of fixed securing arrangements and their locations; the location and stowage of portable securing gear and details of that gear; the correct application of portable securing gear; and the variation in transverse, lateral and vertical accelerations to be expected in various positions aboard the ro/ro ship. In 1985, as Resolution A.581 (14), the IMO finally also adopted "Guidelines for Securing Arrangements for the Transport of Road Vehicles on Ro-Ro Ships." This paper presents a short discussion of the difficulties that cargo stowage presents to the ro/ro operator, and then introduces the provisions of Resolution A.581 (14) in some detail.
