It is explained how a computer system can provide rapid access to container data and flexibility in the movement and control of containers. By use of detailed colored graphics, windowing, and icon and mouse features, the underlying database can be managed in an operator-friendly manner. The power of expert systems can provide an "expert assistant" as an aid to the stowage coordinator in executing the planning task. The coordinator is the final arbiter, however, and may choose to accept or reject the assistant's advice. The particular system described, developed by Transtema, headquartered in Stockholm, is claimed to be the first major user of the new United Nations standards for electronic data interchange.
