PERSISTENT MARINE DEBRIS, PART 2: THE SOLUTION
Having identified the sources, health hazards and environmental effect of marine debris--particularly plastics--in Part 1 of this two-part series, this article deals with the measures available to mitigate or solve the problem. It covers the international treaty that took effect on 31 December 1988 to halt the ocean dumping of plastics, and with state and local efforts, beach cleanups, private corporate initiatives, environmental groups, and individual efforts.
