KNOWLEDGE BASED SYSTEMS AND MAINTAINABILITY
The Fault Isolation System (FIS), created by the Navy Center for Applied Research in Artificial Intelligence, is an expert system shell specifically designed for the development of intelligent diagnostic systems for Navy equipment. According to the author, FIS has been optimized to minimize the knowledge imput effort and to maximize efficiency in locating faults. This paper focuses on the algorithms used to solve diagnostic problems and related artificial intelligence concepts that underlie the design of FIS.
