The relationships between the safety of a ro/ro vessel and its environment, operation and design are numerous and complex. This paper concentrates on those aspects that involve survivability after flooding and the relationships between operation and design. Some of the topics covered are: the current level of risk; current standards of survivability and new developments in those standards; damage stability modeling; safety research studies that have been carried out; the design measures available to lessen susceptibility to capsizing; and safety aspects of ship operation.
