RO-RO PASSENGER FERRY LSA AND EMERGENCY EVACUATION: A MASTER'S VIEW

Following a 1985 seminar titled "Evacuation and Rescue from High- Sided Ferries and Passenger Vessels," the author became a member of a working committee that analyzed the papers presented and gathered further advice from suitably qualified persons. The committee's thinking was further shaped by the HERALD OF FREE ENTERPRISE disaster. Certain of the recommendations that emerged from the committee's work and from the HERALD OF FREE ENTERPRISE investigation are set forth and discussed. They deal with emergency evacuations and cover the design of safety equipment and life-saving appliances, training, the use of helicopters and hovercraft, and the wearing of recognizable uniforms by officers and crew.
