MULTI-PURPOSE DUCTED CP-PROPELLERS, SOME DESIGN AND OPERATION PROBLEMS

The aim of this paper is to explore some of the difficulties that can arise at the design stage and operation of multipurpose ducted controllable pitch (CP) propellers. The most significant problems are seen to be the contradictory requirements of bollard pull and push forces, and the simultaneous demands of transit conditions with full or reduced power that must be met. Observations and analyses reported are based on investigations carried out in the cavitation tunnel and towing tank at SSPA Maritime Consulting, Goteborg, Sweden, with a number of propeller and duct models.
