WHEN CARGOES START TO FLOW

The liquefaction of solid bulk cargoes aboard ship, where part or all of a damp or wet cargo starts to flow, is not only an extremely complex phenomenon, it is also a very dangerous one. This article examines the mechanism of liquefaction and the test methods and criteria used to assess safety. The materials considered are of the kind referred to in the IMO Code of Safe Practice for Solid Bulk Cargoes.
