A plan for an optimal heavy fuel oil (HFO) system for motorships is presented. The basic subsystems--HFO storage, cleaning, heating, and service systems--and their operations are described. Operational principles of system components such as settling tanks, separators, decanters, strainers, and filters are also discussed. The paper concludes with some guidelines for efficient waste oil disposal.
