COASTAL SHIPPING--MEASURES FOR REVIVAL

This article reprints a background paper presented by the author at India's Maritime Day Symposium. It deals with the decline of India's coastal shipping, discussing the reasons for the stagnation and proposing measures for the revival of the industry. Tables show mainland coastal cargo movements, 1952-1988; the development of the Indian coastal fleet, 1951-1988; the economic cost of coastal shipping and alternatives, 1984-85; and the break-even points for coastal shipping vis-a-vis railways and highways.
