PISTON RING WEAR TAKES ON A NEW DIMENSION
MBS Diesel and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries have taken different approaches to monitoring piston ring wear in service, and their respective systems are described. The first, that of MBS Diesel, is an upgrade of the company's SIPWA system and is being marketed as a major maintenance tool. Its essence is that a direct physical measurement of top ring wear is made at every stroke. MHI, on the other hand, is developing a system based on online ferrography for measuring piston ring wear. The aim is to have immediate response that allows automatic electronic adjustment of lube oil feed rates during periods of high wear.
