THE PANAMA CANAL AT 75
The Panama Canal celebrated its 75th anniversary in l989. Although the canal still operates smoothly and provides interoceanic transit to some 33 ships per day, its virtual monopoly is gone and its very existence may no longer be a certainty. This article reviews the history of the canal, including the story of its construction; aspects of the canal's current and future roles; U.S. legislative and legal considerations; and physical modifications to the canal that have come under study. A sidebar gives a profile drawing of the canal.
