REDUCTION SYSTEM OF AFTERBODY VIBRATION DUE TO SURFACE FORCE: MECHANISM AND EFFECT FOR MODEL AND SHIP

A new ship vibration reduction system developed in Japan is described. It is called "Damp Tank" and involves having propeller- induced pressure fluctuations absorbed by air and water contained in a tank that is installed above a propeller. Experimental approaches were taken to investigate the mechanism and the effectiveness of the idea. The results of model experiments conducted in a towing tank and in a circulating water tank are presented, as are trial data for a car carrier that was equipped with the tank.
