SOUND TRANSMISSION LOSS OF A SHIP STRUCTURAL PANEL

Sound transmission through ship structural panels is investigated. Transmission is by out-of-plane panel vibration and by in-plane vibration, and it is shown that the former predominates. Sound transmission loss through a circular panel in an infinite rigid baffle is calculated and the relation between transmission loss and panel stiffness and material is discussed. It is shown that for low frequency vibration, the dominant means of transmission is flexural vibration of the panel. Transmission loss in these cases increases with the flexural rigidity of the panel. For the high frequency range, transmission properties can be explained by the mass law.
