THE PROSPECTIVE CHANGE IN LIFE STYLE SIGNALED BY THE ENERGY CRUNCH

Some speculations on expected changes in life style sparked by the energy dilemma are discussed. The future (1995) general outlook will be a synthesis of ideas coming out of today's low technology communes and high technology industries, and society will be more functional and less possessive. A basic change will be creation of the "recycle society" in which secondary materials (waste and scrap) will be major resources and the untapped natural resources will be the back-up supplies. To make this transition, new legislation, tax incentives and other measures will be necessary. The environmental impact of such a "recycle society" will be greatly reduced. A substitution not only in materials but also in functions is foreseen in the future society. Communications could become a substitute for transportation. Shopping, for example, may be done via videophone and computer. Other changes that may be initiated are listed.
