SURVEY SHIP CARL FR. GAUSS--TWELVE YEARS OF SERVICE

The survey ship CARL FR. GAUSS is described. The vessel was built for the Hydrographic Service of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), and has been in active service since l976. For economic reasons, a mine-sweeper design was chosen and modified for hydrographic operations. Overall length is 56.7m and speed is 19 knots. The crew complement numbers 22, including 8 officers. The entire surveying process is handled with a PDP 11/05 computer and the Autocarta S data acquisition system. A photograph of the vessel and a side-elevation drawing accompany the text.
