THE MARKET FOR STANDARD DESIGN PRODUCT CARRIERS

Factors affecting the selection of the type standard ship to be built, forecasts of anticipated market demand and the operational considerations of the oil majors are presented. Tables are included forecasting (1) residual fuel and gas/diesel oil traffic on the principal routes 1974/1980, (2) composition of U.S imports by discharging area and ports and (3) number of tankers for the product trades demonstrating consequences of obsolescence on availability starting with the current fleet through 1978/1891. The two basic designs under consideration are the STAT 32 and 55 built by Cammell Laird.
