IMMEASURABLE DESIGN IMPROVEMENTS SPURRED BY NEED TO ECONOMISE

The design, construction and performance of individual items in a ship's outfit of auxiliary machinery have improved tremendously under the impetus of the need to reduce operating and maintenance costs. This article looks at various improvements that have affected cooling water systems, the design of medium speed diesel engines, generators, pumps, computer-aided piping system layout, fresh water production using reverse osmosis, and fuel treatment.
