PROSPECTS FOR SMALL POWER MARINE OUTBOARDS IN THE WATERWAY NETWORK REGION OF CHINA

Marine outboards are the most popular waterborne agricultural transport equipment in the waterway network of southern China. Since the start of production in the late l960s, the number of outboard manufacturers has grown to 80. Their combined output exceeds 3,000 units per year. This paper gives a rather detailed introduction to the state of the art. It discusses the structural features and economic aspects of outboards. Existing problems are also outlined and recommendations for improvements are offered. Data are given on the distribution of outboards on inland and coastal waterways, on the number of nonmotorized boats in use and on production capacity for ferroconcrete boats.
