NEW-STYLE STERN TUBE SEAL AND ITS TEST

The lip plane of a conventional seal ring used in stern tubes is vertical to the liner axis during operation. There is no oil backflow through the lip of the ring. The result is faster abrasion wear and shorter life for the friction couple. The authors propose a new type of seal ring with an inclined lip that eliminates this drawback, allowing oil flowback for both rotary directions. The mechanism is described and its structure analyzed. Results of a successful test conducted of the new seal are also presented.
