The past few decades have seen a considerable number of changes in rope technology that are associated with the use of new materials such as polypropylene, polyester and aramid fibers. Based on a visit to Marlow Ropes Ltd, UK, various ropes produced by Marlow that incorporate these developments are described. The company's product line ranges from simple parcel twine to the world's largest eight- strand multiplait synthetic fiber rope. Some salient points on rope selection and use, taken from a leaflet prepared by Marlow, are then highlighted.
