TESTS OF PROPELLER ICE LOADS IN LABORATORY AND FULL SCALE

This paper reviews two series of tests of propeller ice loads carried out at the VTT Ship Laboratory, Espoo, Finland, in order to obtain background data for the development of an interaction model of ice impacts on propeller blades. In the laboratory, ice loads were measured in a series of simplified cutting tests, with natural sea ice taken from the Gulf of Finland. Full scale measurements using a small ferry were then performed to study the actual ice loads acting on the propeller blades and simultaneously register the response of the propulsion machinery. The results of both test series are presented and analyzed.
