EXTENSIVE APPLICATION OF TMCP STEEL PLATES TO SHIP HULLS: 40 KGF/SQ.MM CLASS HIGH YIELD STRESS STEEL

This paper reports on a study conducted by the authors of TMCP (thermo-mechanical control process)--manufactured high-tensive steel plates with yield point of 40 kgf/sq.mm (YP40). These plates were recently developed for use in shipbuilding and can be fabricated almost as easily as plates of the well-proven high-tensile ship steel HT50 with yield points at 32 and 36 kgf/sq.mm levels. The study dealt with the performance required of the YP40 TMPC steel for ship applications, including investigation of the strength of the base metal and of high-heat-input welded joints, and also of the shop fabrication methods best suited to the new steel.
