OPTIMIZATION OF THE LENGTH OF STERN TUBE BEARINGS

The stern tube bearing nearest to the propeller shaft greatly influences the service life of the bearing device. This article reports on experiments carried out to study metal, oil-lubricated stern tube bearings.The work sought to establish the relationship between contact pressure and power consumption while varying factors selected on the basis of a priori information (cantilever-applied force, slip speed, bearing length, and the angle of incline of the bearing relative to the propeller shaft) within the operating modes. From these tests, conclusions are drawn regarding the optimal length of stern tube bearings.
