THE ROLE OF BOARDCOMPUTERS IN THE LOADING PROCEDURES OF RO/RO'S AND FERRIES

A summary is presented of a study titled "Investigation into the Applications of Boardcomputers." The study was prepared by Wijsmuller Engineering B.V. for the Netherlands Ministry of Transport and Public Works, Directorate--General Shipping and Maritime Affairs. The Directorate is considering prescribing compulsory rules and regulations concerning the use of boardcomputers to enhance onboard safety. The study was prepared in support of this intention. Its first part discusses safety issues and the role of boardcomputers in enhancing safety during loading. Its second part presents an inventory of available systems, based on a questionnaire sent to 51 manufacturers of such systems. The main conclusion is that a boardcomputer only contributes to safe ship loading when it is integrated into the actual operational loading procedures for a particular type of ship and its service. Such loading procedures should be characterized by good, standardized procedures, explicit organization, and the availability of all relevant information.
