A VOYAGE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM TO IMPROVE THE ECONOMY OF OPERATION OF SHIPS

In conjunction with the United Kingdom Efficient Ship Program, the Ship Control Group at Plymouth Polytechnic is developing a voyage management system that will automatically guide a vessel from off the berth at the departure port to off the berth at the arrival port. To carry out this function, the system will compute an accurate position fix and generate ship control commands for following an optimum route. The system takes predicted weather conditions into account and operates with a minimum of manual involvement, making for an economic passage between ports. This paper describes the extensive use made of simulation and afloat facilities at Plymouth Polytechnic in connection with system design. Mathematical models developed in earlier research programs have been used extensively, and Kalman filtering techniques, multivariable control processes, collision avoidance optimization and weather routing are being incorporated into the system.
