FUTURE FUELS--PROBLEMS AND COUNTERMEASURES OF CURRENT LOW GRADE FUEL FOR MARINE DIESEL ENGINES
The influence of low grade fuels on diesel engine performance is examined. Developments in engine design for coping with low grade fuel operation are described. Three factors are highlighted as having the greatest influence on attaining real heavy fuel capability: exhaust valve condition, piston ring effectiveness, and the ignition quality of the fuels. The paper concludes with a discussion of the treatment required for low grade fuels and recommendations for engine inspections and maintenance under heavy fuel operation.
